To create a capsule wardrobe with a leather jacket, first look at how the pieces you have work together. A capsule wardrobe is an approach to using a small number of clothes in different combinations. The goal is not to reach a specific number, but to make it easier to evaluate options when getting dressed in the morning. In this example, we are building an eight-piece foundation around a jacket.
Eight-piece sample list
- Black leather jacket
- Ecru plain t-shirt
- Light blue shirt
- Grey fine knitwear
- Dark blue straight-cut jeans
- Anthracite trousers
- Light-colored plain sneakers
- Black plain boots
Shoes are also included in the eight pieces; underwear and accessories are not included in this sample list. Do not see the list as a shopping obligation. If you have a piece in your wardrobe that serves a similar function, use it first. Your existing dark-colored shoes might also be more suitable for your daily needs instead of boots.
Outfit 1: Casual and simple
Pair the leather jacket, ecru t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and sneakers. A color relationship is established between the light t-shirt and the shoes. You can leave the t-shirt visible by wearing the jacket with the zipper open.
Outfit 2: Relaxed look with a shirt
Wear the light blue shirt open over the ecru t-shirt; complete with jeans and sneakers. When the jacket is added, there will be three top layers, so check your range of motion. If it feels too tight, remove the t-shirt and use the shirt as a single layer.
Outfit 3: A more refined day

Combine the shirt, anthracite trousers, black boots, and leather jacket. You can create a neater look by tucking the shirt into your trousers. The suitability of this combination for your work environment depends on your workplace's dress code.
Outfit 4: Knitwear and jeans
Complete the grey knitwear, dark blue jeans, and boots with the jacket. The texture of the knitwear separates it from the flat surfaces in the outfit. Adjust the thickness of the inner layer according to the cut of the jacket; consider movement as well as appearance for comfort.
Outfit 5: Simple pairing for the evening
Use similar tones with grey knitwear, anthracite trousers, and black boots. The black jacket continues this color scheme. Instead of adding a new piece of clothing, you simply change the pairing of existing pieces.
Before expanding your wardrobe
Note which pieces you used for a week. Prioritize a piece that you repeatedly feel is missing. When considering a new item, check if you can create at least a few different pairings with your existing clothes. This way, you can reduce the accumulation of items bought for a single outfit.
Can a brown jacket be used instead of black?
Yes. You can keep the ecru, light blue, and dark jeans base and consider the shoe and trouser tones alongside your brown jacket. Adapt the capsule colors to your own wardrobe.
